To parent like a guru – we inevitably learn to let go of everything we think we know about parenting.
To parent like a guru, let go of how you perceive yourself as a parent or grandparent. Let go of the stresses and the worries, plus the hoped-for outcomes of all the blood, sweat & tears you have brought to this role as parent or grandparent thus far. Let go of doing it right, being perfect, never failing your children, or feeling like a failure yourself. Parenting like a guru requires letting go of all of that, and more.
Parenting, taken on as a spiritual practice, is not about being in serenity every minute of every day; generating a perfect environment to instill everything you want for your children. It isn’t about meditating and silencing the mind. Parenting as a spiritual practice requires you to empower yourself to become more mindful, training yourself to notice your thoughts, feelings, and body sensations, as well as what has you choose to do what you do.
After publishing Cultivating Spirituality in Children: 101 Ways to Make Every Child’s Spirit Soar, I created a free, 28 day video-blog series; the intention of which was to make the material in the book more accessible (Click here if you’d like to receive the series via email). Then it occurred to me that many of you aren’t interested in a whole series of blogs, and that just one or two of these blogs out be of interest to you. So, here we are!
My heart felt intention of the book, the series, and now these blogs, is to remind you of that moment when you felt the love of your child, or grandchild, and you were blown away by your capacity to love. I want to empower you to empower yourself to return to that love, which resides in you always, but often gets buried by the demands of daily activities, stresses and worries.
The degree to which you are interested in living in that love, will be the degree to which you find yourself staying present, as best as you can, to what you believe to be your highest truth and your highest contribution to the well-being of your children and grandchildren.
None of us get it right and we never get it done.
What we get, over our lifetimes are thousands of opportunities to notice when and how we are doing, what we do, as parents and grandparents. And, within every one of these opportunities is the gift of the direct experience, which will always reflect the degree to which we choose to stay in alignment with our truth, our values, and our desires and commitments to make our children’s spirit soar.
Like all spiritual practices, we cannot hurry the process, because, as most gurus will tell you, there is nowhere to go that is any better than this exquisite moment within which you a currently living. To hurry or rush means that you believe that this moment is less important, less valuable than another.
Just for this moment, practice closing your eyes and feeling into your being. Notice the state of your being “ relaxed, anxious, angry, happy. These states of being directly influence how you do what you do as a parent and as a person.
Ask yourself: "What is the state of being that I want to experience as I parent my children? As a grandparent, teacher, or guardian of children, you can ask the same questions, as all of us are being a certain way and being influenced by our being-ness. The second question is “ "How do I allow my circumstances to influence how I be a parent?"
Starting here, where you are right now, allows you to notice who you are while you discern how you want to be as you begin to parent like a guru.
